United Nations Removes Sanctions on Syria's Leader Prior to White House Visit
Security Council representatives gave the green light to a United States-backed measure to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his Washington trip next week.
He became provisional head of state after leading an insurgent campaign that drove out the former president in the final month of 2024, bringing to a close thirteen long years of domestic strife.
The US representative to the UN Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a strong political signal" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a new era" following Assad's ouster.
Previously, he faced UN sanctions in his role as head of the Muslim faction HTS, previously associated with the extremist organization. Washington eliminated HTS from a list of global extremist entities during July.
Additional Sanctions Relief
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.
The nation's top diplomat expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks to Washington and to friendly nations for their support the country and its population."
Imminent Washington Talks
The Syrian leader's Washington trip on Monday occurs subsequent to President Trump said the Syrian leader had made "good progress" working toward stability to the war-torn country.
The pair met initially during May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia on a tour of the Middle East.
After that meeting, America's leader characterized Sharaa as a "tough guy" with a "very strong past".
His former militant faction was al-Qaeda's affiliate inside the country until he severed ties during 2016.
Earlier American Trip
This week's diplomatic engagement does not represent the president's debut journey to the United States this year. In September, he emerged as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to address the United Nations gathering in Manhattan in almost 60 years.
During his address, he declared the nation was "restoring its proper position across international circles" while showing support with the people of Gaza.
