'The last stretch proved absolutely grueling': UK duo finish epic voyage in Down Under after paddling across the vast Pacific

One more day. One more session navigating merciless swells. A final stretch with aching hands holding onto unyielding oars.

But after more than 8,000 nautical miles at sea – an epic five-and-a-half-month journey over the Pacific Ocean that included intimate meetings with marine giants, defective signaling devices and sweet treat crises – the sea had one more challenge.

Powerful 20-knot gusts off Cairns continuously drove their tiny rowboat, their rowing boat Velocity, away from solid ground that was now achingly close.

Loved ones gathered on land as an expected noon touchdown became 2pm, then 4pm, then dusk. Ultimately, at 6:42 PM, they arrived at the Cairns marina.

"Those last hours tested every fiber," Rowe stated, at last on firm earth.

"Gusts were driving us from the passage, and we truly doubted we would succeed. We ended up outside the channel and considered swimming the remaining distance. To at last reach our destination, following years of planning, proves truly extraordinary."

The Extraordinary Expedition Starts

The British pair – Rowe is 28 and Payne 25 – departed from Lima, Peru on May fifth (an earlier April effort was halted by steering issues).

Over 165 days at sea, they maintained 50 nautical miles daily, paddling together in daylight, individual night shifts while her teammate dozed minimal sleep in a cramped cabin.

Endurance and Obstacles

Nourished by 400kg of preserved provisions, a seawater purification system and a vessel-based sprout cultivation system, the women counted on an unpredictable photovoltaic arrangement for limited energy demands.

During most of their voyage through the expansive ocean, they operated without navigation tools or beacon, creating a phantom vessel scenario, nearly undetectable to passing ships.

The pair have borne 9-metre waves, crossed commercial routes and weathered furious gales that, on occasion, silenced all of their electronics.

Record-Breaking Achievement

Yet they continued paddling, stroke by relentless stroke, through scorching daylight hours, beneath celestial nightscapes.

They have set a new record as the initial female duo to paddle over the South Pacific, continuously and independently.

Furthermore they gathered in excess of £86k (Australian $179,000) for the Outward Bound Trust.

Life Aboard

The women attempted to stay connected with society beyond their small boat.

During the 140s of their journey, they announced a "sweet treat shortage" – reduced to their final two portions with still more than 1,600km to go – but granted themselves the pleasure of opening one bar to mark the English squad's winning the Rugby World Cup.

Personal Insights

Payne, originating from Yorkshire's non-coastal region, lacked ocean experience prior to her independent Atlantic journey in 2022 in a record time.

She has now mastered another ocean. Yet there were periods, she conceded, when failure seemed possible. As early as day six, a path over the planet's biggest sea appeared insurmountable.

"Our energy was failing, the freshwater system lines broke, however following multiple fixes, we achieved an alternative solution and barely maintained progress with minimal electricity during the final expedition phase. Each time problems occurred, we merely made eye contact and went, 'of course it has!' But we kept going."

"It was really great to have Jess as a teammate. What was great was that we worked hard together, we resolved issues as a team, and we consistently shared identical objectives," she stated.

Rowe is from Hampshire. Before her Pacific triumph, she paddled the Atlantic, trekked England's coastal trail, climbed Mount Kenya and pedaled across Spanish terrain. There might still be more.

"We had such a good time together, and we're already excited to plan new adventures collectively once more. No other partner would have sufficed."
