Novak Djokovic Delivers Caution to Jannik Sinner: Suspension Will Hang Over Him Like a "Shadow"

Novak Djokovic has cautioned Jannik Sinner that his three-month doping suspension will persist over his career as a constant shadow – and raised doubts about the timing of the sanction in the previous season.

The Ban Explained

The Italian player served a three-month suspension in February 2025 after the global anti-doping body approved his account that a banned anabolic steroid, the steroid clostebol, had been ingested unintentionally.

"That cloud will follow him just as the Covid controversy will follow me, for the remainder of our respective careers," Djokovic stated in an interview on a popular YouTube program.

"It's just something that, it was so significant, and after such events, with time it may lessen, but I believe it won't fully vanish. There's always going to be a specific segment of individuals that will continually reference the incident."

The Champion's Viewpoint

Djokovic expressed belief that Sinner, his frequent training companion, "had no intentional involvement", but he proceeded to question how the Italian managed to serve his time without sitting out any major tournaments.

"The absence of openness, the inconsistency, the convenience [of] the ban occurring between major events, so he avoids skipping important competitions – it simply appeared highly unusual," Djokovic added.

Broader Tennis Community Response

"I really don't like how the case was being handled and it was evident numerous fellow athletes, both male and female, who had comparable circumstances coming out in the media and asserting it represented favorable handling."
